One Question That Rebuilds Trust
It's not the answer. It's that you cared to ask.
Trust rarely breaks in one moment. It erodes — in the unasked questions, the assumed answers, the things we 'already know' about each other that we stopped checking.
The rebuild is quieter than the break. It's a question, asked with genuine curiosity about a person you've decided you already know.
The question
What's one thing I do that makes this harder than it needs to be?
That's it. Not a speech. Not a defense. A question — and then the silence to actually hear the answer.
Why it works
The question says: I take you seriously enough to be wrong about me. That's the soil trust grows in. Not perfection. Coachability.
You don't have to agree with the answer. You have to receive it without flinching. Say 'thank you for telling me' before you say anything else. The thank-you is the trust.
Ask it this week. Then do the harder thing: act on one piece of it.
