How to Be an Ally Without Burning Out

You can't be a steady presence from an empty tank.

The allies who burn out aren't the ones who care too much. They're the ones who forgot they were on the team too.

You can hold steady ground for someone else only if you're standing on some yourself. And standing takes fuel — rest, boundaries, your own ally in the mirror.

The ally's first duty

Here's the reframe that saves allies: your first duty is to be well enough to stay. Not to fix. Not to carry. To stay — sustainably.

The martyr ally looks heroic until they disappear. The purposeful ally looks ordinary and shows up for the tenth year.

Three refills

  • A boundary you keep when no one's watching. The standard you hold for your own sleep, your own silence, your own no.
  • A person who allies you. Everyone pouring out needs someone pouring in. Find one. Be one.
  • A practice that's only yours. Not productive. Not shared. Just yours — the walk, the page, the breath.

You're not selfish for refilling. You're staying in the work.
